Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana, welcomes international travelers through Sir Seretse Khama International Airport and various land border crossings. Botswana maintains a relatively open visa policy, with many nationalities enjoying visa-free access for tourism and business purposes. The country's immigration system is generally efficient and straightforward, though travelers should ensure they meet all entry requirements before departure. Upon arrival in Gaborone, visitors will proceed through immigration control where officers will verify travel documents, purpose of visit, and intended length of stay. The process is typically smooth for those with proper documentation, including a valid passport with at least six months validity, proof of sufficient funds, and onward or return travel tickets. Botswana takes border security seriously while maintaining a welcoming approach to legitimate tourists and business travelers. It's essential to understand that entry requirements can change, and specific circumstances may affect individual travelers differently. Visitors should always verify current requirements with the nearest Botswana diplomatic mission or the official government immigration website before traveling. This is particularly important for those planning extended stays, traveling with children, or requiring special documentation.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Complete arrival cards during your flight to save time at immigration. Cards are usually distributed by cabin crew.
Keep all important documents in an easily accessible carry-on bag, not in checked luggage.
Have printed copies of hotel reservations and return tickets, even if you have electronic versions, as internet access may be limited.
Be polite and patient with immigration officers. Answer questions clearly and honestly.
Dress appropriately and present yourself well at immigration, as first impressions matter.
If traveling for business, have invitation letters or conference documentation readily available.
Exchange some currency before arrival or at the airport to have local funds for immediate needs like transportation.
Take note of the date stamped in your passport showing when you must depart to avoid overstaying.

Customs & Duty-Free

Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) manages customs operations at all ports of entry. The country has standard duty-free allowances for personal items, with strict regulations on prohibited and restricted goods. Health Requirements

Botswana requires certain health documentation for entry, particularly related to yellow fever. While the country has good healthcare facilities in Gaborone, travelers should take appropriate health precautions.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required if arriving from or having transited through yellow fever endemic countries within 6 days prior to arrival. Health Insurance

Travel health insurance is strongly recommended but not mandatory for entry. Botswana has good private healthcare facilities in Gaborone, but medical costs can be high and must be paid upfront. Insurance should cover medical evacuation as specialized treatments may require transfer to South Africa. Ensure your policy covers activities you plan to undertake, including safari activities.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly based on global health situations. Check current COVID-19 requirements, testing protocols, quarantine rules, and health declaration forms before travel. Visit the Botswana Ministry of Health website or contact your airline for the latest requirements. Some countries may have exit requirements that differ from Botswana's entry requirements.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passports with 6 months validity. Botswana has strict requirements for minors: both parents traveling with child should carry the child's full birth certificate (unabridged) showing both parents' details. If one parent is traveling alone with a child, carry a notarized affidavit of consent from the non-traveling parent, plus a copy of that parent's passport/ID. If a parent is deceased, carry the death certificate. If a child is traveling with non-parents (guardians, relatives, school groups), carry notarized affidavits from both parents, copies of parents' IDs, birth certificate, and letter explaining the relationship. These requirements are strictly enforced at all borders.

Traveling with Pets

Pets require an import permit obtained in advance from the Department of Veterinary Services in Botswana. Required documentation includes: valid rabies vaccination certificate (at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel for dogs/cats), veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, microchip identification, and proof of treatment for internal and external parasites. Pets from rabies-endemic countries may require additional quarantine or testing. Dogs from certain breeds may be restricted. Apply for permits at least 30 days before travel. Pets must enter through designated ports of entry.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas/visa-free stays are typically limited to 90 days. For longer stays, apply for an extension at the Department of Immigration in Gaborone before your authorized stay expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration officials and typically require proof of sufficient funds, accommodation, and valid reason for extension. For stays beyond tourist purposes (work, study, residence), you must apply for appropriate permits: work permits for employment, study permits for students, or residence permits for long-term stays. These require extensive documentation and should be applied for from your home country before travel. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and future entry bans.

Business Travelers

Business visitors entering visa-free or with tourist visas can attend meetings, conferences, and negotiations but cannot engage in paid employment or work. For actual employment, a work permit is required before starting work. Business travelers should carry invitation letters from Botswana companies, conference registration, or business cards. For trade shows or bringing commercial samples, additional customs documentation may be required.

Transit Passengers

Passengers transiting through Gaborone without leaving the airport international area typically do not need a visa if continuing within 24 hours. However, if you need to collect baggage, change terminals, or leave the airport, you must meet standard entry requirements for your nationality. Confirm transit visa requirements with your airline before travel.

Journalists and Media

Professional journalists and media crews require media accreditation from the Department of Information and Broadcasting before arrival. This includes photographers, videographers, and documentary makers. Tourist photography is generally permitted, but professional media work without proper accreditation can result in equipment confiscation and deportation. Apply for accreditation well in advance through Botswana diplomatic missions.
